Sachin, Dravid sparkle for India at MCG

Sachin Tendulkar and Rahul Dravid added 117 runs for the third wicket on the second day of the first Test against Australia at the Melbourne Cricket Ground. (AFP Photo)

MELBOURNE: Denied Rahul Dravid's wicket by a cruel 'twist of foot', Peter Siddle broke a billion hearts by pegging back Sachin Tendulkar's off stump in fading daylight at the MCG on Tuesday.

Scorecard | Match in Pics

A sizzler from Siddle streaked through the gate as the Little Master fell 27 runs short in his latest quest for the 100th international hundred.

It was gut-wrenching to see Tendulkar walk back to the dressing room after entertaining the MCG crowd for two-and-a-half hours with a cheeky yet commanding innings of 73 during which he tempted fate and tormented rivals in equal measure.

It was also poetic justice for Siddle, who had clean bowled the seasoned Dravid for 65 in the 59th over of the Indian innings only to be told via the third umpire that he had over-stepped while delivering the ball.

A bemused Dravid forgot all about the cramps, that required on-field medical attention, and quickly resumed his innings to be unbeaten on an edgy yet invaluable 68 as India ended Day 2 of the first Test ahead of the hosts.

In reply to Australia's first innings tally of 333, India were 214 for three, and looking good for a healthy first-innings lead that could decide the fate of the Boxing Day Test.

India owed their position of pre-eminence to Test cricket's top-two run-getters, who not only kept a hardworking Australian pace attack at bay for the better part of the last two sessions, but also laid the foundation for a strong reply.

While Tendulkar's innings was laced with classical drives and flashy upper cuts, Dravid, fought his way through a patchy period during which he played and missed often. It was hard work against Siddle, Ben Hilfenhaus and James Pattinson, who seldom erred in length or direction.

Messrs Tendulkar and Dravid, who have long established themselves as the most profitable partnership firm in Test cricket, added another ton to their logbook. A 117-run partnership for the third wicket took their tally of century stands to 20 in 140 innings and total number of runs amassed by the duo in the process to a staggering 6,864!

The Tendulkar-Dravid show was hardly about numbers, though. Tendulkar joined forces with Dravid after Pattinson ended Virender Sehwag's somewhat charmed existence with a thunderbolt that the opener dragged back on to his stumps.

Sehwag, who was dropped by Michael Hussey at gully, Brad Haddin behind the stumps and almost got caught by David Warner, running in from long-on, failed to make it count as much as he would have liked to. His 67 off 83 balls only pinched the Aussies, who met with an early success when Haddin held a regulation catch to dismiss Gautam Gambhir off Hilfenhaus. Gambhir, who was made to hop around by the pacers, looked tentative during his brief stay at the wicket.

Tendulkar began with a streaky inside-edge for four, but an audacious upper cut off Siddle - the first delivery after tea - that landed beyond the third man fence, revealed his naked ambition. Soon, though, Tendulkar almost got out, spooning up an intended leg glance off part-times Hussey to silly mid-on beyond the reach of a fielder.

However, the authority with which he cover-drove Siddle on a bent knee, flicked Hilfenhaus to the fine-leg fence with finesse and slog-swept Nathan Lyon repeatedly to mid-wicket, indicated that the master was in his zone. He brought up his half-century off 55 balls with a gentle on-drive off Lyon, but couldn't see India through the close of play.

NBA Commish Stern opens season with boos in Dallas

(AP) ? NBA Commissioner David Stern opened his lockout-delayed season by hearing boos from fans.

Stern was in Dallas for the NBA finals rematch between the Mavericks and Heat, and he was on the court for the start of the Mavs' banner-raising ceremony honoring their first championship. The jeers came as soon as he started speaking, but he quickly turned them into cheers by offering his congratulations to team owner Mark Cuban.

Cuban's often contentious relationship with Stern could've been as much of a reason for the boos as the lockout, which pushed the opener from Nov. 1 to Christmas and cut the season by 16 games.

Cuban and Miami's Mickey Arison were among five owners who voted against the labor deal. Stern downplayed that, hailing the agreement as beneficial to everyone.

Syria's Alawites are secretive, unorthodox sect (Reuters)

PARIS (Reuters) ? The clannishness, secrecy and tenacity of Syria's power elite around President Bashar al-Assad are hallmarks of the enigmatic Alawite faith that unites its members and arouses suspicion among the majority Sunnis.

An oppressed minority for most of their history, Alawites suddenly took control in Syria in 1970 when Assad's father Hafez staged a coup that sidelined the Sunnis. He built a ferocious security apparatus based on fellow Alawite officers.

This year's bloody struggle between Assad's forces and pro-democracy protesters, which has cost thousands of lives, splits the country along a minority-majority gulf made deeper by the fact many Sunnis call Alawites heretics and apostates.

"The political animosities have developed over the past 41 years that the Assads have been in power, but the religious animosities go back many centuries," said Mohamad Bazzi, senior fellow at the Council on Foreign Relations in New York. Like most other Arab countries, Syria has seen conservative Islam spreading in recent decades. This has sharpened Sunni differences with the Alawites, who claim to be mainline Shi'ites and sometimes copy Sunni practices to play down differences.

The government's brutal crackdown on protesters this year has also widened this split, Bazzi said, prompting some leaders of the mainly Sunni opposition Muslim Brotherhood to row back on a more moderate approach they had taken in recent years.

"Lately some statements by leaders associated with the Brotherhood were very sectarian," he said. "Once the sectarian genie is out of the bottle, it's difficult to put it back in."

Sunnis Muslims make up 74 percent of Syria's 22 million population, Alawites 12 percent, Christians 10 percent and Druze 3 percent. Ismailis, Yezidis and a few Jews make up the rest.

AN UNCERTAIN OFFSHOOT

The Alawite religion is often called "an offshoot of Shi'ism," Islam's largest minority sect, but that is something like referring to Christianity as "an offshoot of Judaism."

Alawites broke away from Shi'ism over 1,000 years ago and retain some links to it, including the veneration of Ali, the cousin and son-in law of the Prophet Mohammad.

But several beliefs differ sharply from traditional Islam. Named after Ali, Alawites believe he was divine, one of many manifestations of God in a line with Adam, Jesus, Mohammad, Socrates, Plato and some pre-Islamic sages from ancient Persia.

To orthodox Muslims, this eclectic synthesis of Christian, Gnostic, Neoplatonic and Zoroastrian thought violates Islam's key tenet that "there is no God but God."

Isolated in the mountains near Syria's Mediterranean coast, Alawites taught the Koran was to be read allegorically and preferred to pray at home rather than in mosques.

They were also highly secretive, initiating only a minority of believers into their core dogma, including reincarnation and a divine Trinity, and into rituals including a rite of drinking consecrated wine similar to a Christian Mass.

Like the nearby Druze, Alawites adopted the Shi'ite practice of taqiyya, or hiding their beliefs to avoid persecution.

"Taqiyya makes a perfect qualification for membership in the mukhabarat, the ubiquitous intelligence/security apparatus that has dominated Syria's government for more than four decades," the British Islam expert Malise Ruthven wrote recently.

FEARS OF REVENGE

Oppressed during the Ottoman period, Alawites have played down their distinctive beliefs in recent decades to argue they were mainline Shi'ites like in Iran. This is partly to satisfy the constitutional rule that the president must be a Muslim.

The outlawed Muslim Brotherhood called the Alawites infidels for decades. Leaders of the Sunni movement no longer say this openly, but nobody knows whether the rank and file is convinced.

The ruling Baath Party is officially secular, which has helped Alawites win support as protectors of other minorities.

"Hafez al-Assad constructed a minority system, with Christians, Druze and Ismailis, to rule over a Sunni Muslim country," said Andrew Tabler, Syria analyst at the Washington Institute for Near East Policy.

"Most of the protesters now are also Sunnis, so the current violence has affected the Sunni population more," he said.

The tension that system produced makes Alawites, Christians and the other minorities fear bloody sectarian violence in revenge against them if Sunnis should regain power.

"If there is a change of regime," Chaldean Bishop Antoine Audo of Aleppo told a conference in Venice last June, "It's the end of Christianity in Syria. I saw what happened in Iraq."

Bazzi said a double car bombing in Damascus on Friday that killed 44 people could be a further escalation of Sunni violence against the Alawite-led state.

"Syria was a major staging area for Sunni jihadis (attacking U.S. forces) in Iraq," he said. "Many of these networks are still in place in Syria. These are elements that view Shi'ites as heretics and Alawites as even more heretical."

FORT WAYNE, Indiana (AP) ? Police say 40,000 pounds (18,000 kilograms) of ice cream have spilled from a semitrailer in the state of Indiana, closing two lanes of an interstate highway at the start of the holiday weekend.

The Journal Gazette and WPTA-TV report the spill happened about 4 p.m. local time Friday and was expected to take as long as six hours to clean up completely. One southbound lane remained open.

Police say the truck was trying to enter the interstate from a ramp when it tipped, spilling cartons of vanilla, caramel praline crunch and other flavors of Edy's ice cream onto the interstate.

Police say the truck driver had minor injuries and was taken to a hospital to be checked out.

US sentencing postponed for Somali pirates (AP)

NORFOLK, Va. ? Sentencing hearings in the United States have been postponed for the last of 11 men who have pleaded guilty to piracy for hijacking an American yacht off the coast of Africa.

Somalis Said Abdi Fooley and Abdi Jama Aqid were to be sentenced Friday in federal court in Norfolk, Va. Piracy carries a mandatory life sentence.

U.S. Attorney's office spokesman Peter Carr said Friday that no new sentencing dates were immediately available.

They're among 14 men charged in the boarding of the Quest in February several hundred miles south of Oman. All four aboard the 58-foot yacht were fatally shot days later after negotiations with the U.S. Navy broke down.

Three men who prosecutors say shot the Americans are facing murder and other charges that could carry the death penalty.

Andrew Brandt: The Secret Word on Hurd

A criminal complaint was filed yesterday against Sam Hurd, the now-former wide receiver of the Chicago Bears. It is a shocking account of a pattern of activity from a player well-respected and seen as nothing like the one depicted in the complaint. An official at the Bears told me "He seemed like a great guy, quoting the Bible and always friendly." Most con men are.

The complaint includes an affidavit attached to it, required to show probable cause to arrest, wherein the federal agent swears under oath that this story is true.

Days before signing with Bears

On July 27, T.L. (a Hurd co-conspirator) attempted to purchase 4 kgs of cocaine on behalf of Hurd from a Homeland Security confidential informant.

They set up a meeting in Dallas and federal agents intervened, stopping T.L. for a routine traffic stop where they discovered marijuana and $88,000. T.L. said both the money and car belonged to Hurd. A vehicle registration check showed that the car did belong to Hurd. T.L. said that he routinely performed maintenance on Hurd's cars. The authorities seized the money and released T.L.

On July 28 Hurd contacted and met with federal agents, stating that he was a Dallas Cowboy and that the $88,000 was his. He claimed he withdrew the money from a certain bank account and packed the money in his car prior to leaving it with T.L. for "maintenance and detailing." The agents reviewed the bank statement, which didn't corroborate Hurd's story as the transactions and amounts differed.

On July 29, Hurd signed a three-year contract with the Bears that provided a $1.35 million signing bonus and a 2011 salary of $685,000.

More summer heat

On Aug. 14, T.L. again tried to broker a deal for Hurd with the informant, this for purchasing 5 kgs of cocaine.

On Aug. 15, federal agents learned of Hurd's association with four California men arrested on July 25th possessing money, drugs, and weapons. Hurd's cell phone number appeared in texts describing drug dealing and money laundering.

Season starts, drug activity continues

On Sept. 9, T.L. again tried to broker a deal for Hurd with the informant for 5 kgs of cocaine.

On Dec. 6, T.L. met the informant at a Firestone store in Texas where he contacted Hurd and passed the phone to the informant. Hurd expressed his desire to purchase 5 kgs of cocaine and said T.L. would give him Hurd's phone number in case the informant was ever in the Chicago area.

Sting set up

On Dec. 14, Hurd met the informant and an undercover agent at Morton's Steakhouse in Chicago. Hurd was interested in purchasing 5-10 kgs of cocaine and 1,000 lbs of marijuana per week. They negotiated a price of $25,000 per kg of cocaine and $450 per lb of marijuana. Hurd acknowledged that he currently distributed about 4 kgs of cocaine per week in the Chicago area and that while his partner did smaller deals, Hurd focused on "higher-end" ones.

Hurd also inquired as to Mexican cell phones -- believing them to be safe from law enforcement hearing conversations -- while also disclosing that he had money seized in Dallas months earlier.

The undercover agent provided Hurd with 1 kg of cocaine. Hurd left the restaurant, placed the bag in his vehicle, and was subsequently arrested by authorities.

The charge

Hurd is officially charged with "knowingly, intentionally and unlawfully combine, conspire, confederate, and agree together, and with other persons known and unknown, to possess with the intent to distribute 500 grams... of cocaine, a controlled substance." He faces the possibility of up to 40 years in prison

A federal judge in Chicago ruled that Hurd must stand trial in Texas because the criminal charges were filed there.

Hurd is represented by Los Angeles attorney David Kenner, whose past clients include Snoop Dogg.

Bigger issues

More worrisome for the NFL -- other than the disturbing facts of the story itself -- is that the authorities claim to have a list (possibly in the double digits) of NFL clients that Hurd served.

Unfortunately for the Bears and perhaps the Cowboys and the NFL, this story is only the beginning.

As with many criminals, people who thought they knew Hurd are shocked. Stay tuned.

Senate confirms U.S. envoy to Russia (Reuters)

WASHINGTON (Reuters) ? The Obama administration's top adviser on Russia policy, Michael McFaul, was approved by the Senate on Saturday to serve as the country's ambassador to Moscow.

McFaul was a leading architect of the Democratic administration's "reset" policy of improving relations with Russia and helped negotiate a new U.S.-Russia nuclear arms reduction treaty.

The former Stanford University professor replaces John Beyrle, who was appointed in 2008 by former President George W. Bush. McFaul's confirmation had been temporarily delayed over concerns among Republicans about possible cuts to nuclear weapons spending.

Jay-Z Compares Running Roc Nation To 'Having Kids'

'When you see that someone can make it on their own ... you let that talent be,' label boss says of J. Cole.
By Rob Markman

Jay-Z
Photo: MTV News

Jay-Z isn't a dad quite yet, but maybe his many years as a label head has prepped him for fatherhood.

"I think running a label is a bit like having kids," Hov told MTV News while in New York to promote two charitable Carnegie Hall concerts in February.

The Roc Nation CEO's answer came in response to criticism that he could have done more to endorseJ. Cole, who dropped his debut, Cole Word: The Sideline Story, in September. "When you know someone needs more help, you help them," Jigga said. "When you see that someone can make it on their own ... you see Kanye or J. Cole, you see that sort of talent — you let that talent be. You let that talent find its way."

It's no secret that a co-sign from the God MC can help anyone's career, but in the case of J. Cole, Hov didn't believe his Roc Nation signee needed any more than what he was given. And apparently, Jay was right. With Sideline Story, Cole debuted at #1 on the Billboard albums chart, selling more than 217,000 copies in its first week of release.

To Hova's credit, he did appear on "Mr. Nice Watch," a braggadocios album cut off of Cole's debut, but the guest appearance came in the ninth inning. By August, Jay had not yet contributed to the album. During a press listening session that month it was clear that Cole was not expecting the feature. "Nobody owes me anything," he said. "Jay-Z doesn't owe me a verse because I signed to him."

Still, Jay was watching his protégé from afar, careful not to interfere with Cole's creative process. "Of course, you're not gonna let any harm befall it," Hov said of his approach to cultivating talent. "You pretty much let people find their way."

As Roc Nation enters 2012 with a roster that includes Willow Smith, Jay Electronica and vocalist Bridget Kelly, Hov has set a standard on how he intends to run his company. "I'm just really here to provide opportunity. I'm not here to do anything else," he said. "I provide the opportunity, you figure out what you want to say to the world and how you gonna do it.

"It's much more than just a [16-bar verse] and an endorsement deal; it's an opportunity to let your voice be heard. It's really about you, it's not about me."

What do you think Jay's approach to running Roc Nation? Sound off in the comments below!

HBT: Twins, Willingham close on 3-year deal

11:15 PM ET: Joe Christensen of the Minneapolis Star-Tribune reports that the Twins and Willingham are ?very close? to a three-year, $21 million contract.

UPDATE III: Hold up. Rhett Bollinger of MLB.com and Joe Christensen of the Minneapolis Star-Tribune are both hearing that a deal between the Twins and Willingham isn?t done. What?s more, Christensen reports that talks aren?t dead with Michael Cuddyer. This could get interesting.

UPDATE II: Jerry Crasnick of ESPN.com reports that the Twins and Willingham have agreed to a contract, pending a physical. No word on the exact terms, but Crasnick hears that it?s a multi-year contract.

UPDATE: Not only are the Indians out of the mix, Rosenthal now reports that the Twins are ?near an agreement? with Willingham.

==========

Cleveland has been linked to Josh Willingham for weeks now, but Ken Rosenthal of FOXSports.com reported this afternoon that the Indians are no longer pursuing the free agent outfielder and now team president Mark Shapiro has made that very clear on Twitter.

Shapiro made a couple tweets urging fans to be patient despite the Indians? lack of offseason activity and then responded to a question specifically about Willingham like this:

source:

Nothing is official yet, of course, but it seems pretty unlikely that Shapiro would be willing to make a comment like that about Willingham if there was any chance of him signing with the Indians.

And if the Indians are truly out of the mix for Willingham that leaves the Twins as heavy favorites.

Razor-toothed meat-eater was mammal relative

A newly identified primitive mammal-like animal was agile, sleek and had a voracious appetite for meat.

The animal, identified as a varanopid pelycosaur and part of the genus Aerosaurus, looked like today's Komodo dragons, but was actually more closely related to mammals, according to a study published in the journal Naturwissenschaften (The Science of Nature).

"Our varanopid was probably about the size of an adult Nile monitor found in Africa," co-author Sean Modesto told Discovery News.

"It would have looked superficially like one too. The curvature of the teeth (the tips curve back towards the throat) and the serrations on the cutting edges of these teeth suggest that the animal was equipped to rip flesh from vertebrate prey."

PHOTOS: Living Fossils: Animals From Another Time

One of the world's most successful fossil hunters, Roger Smith, found and collected the specimen, which consists of a partial skull and jaw. Smith, another co-author, discovered the remains in rocks from the Pristerognathus Assemblage Zone of the Beaufort Group, South Africa.

The carnivore is the youngest known primitive mammal-like mammal. It lived about 260 million years ago during the Permian Period and was part of "the first wave of creatures on the evolutionary line to mammals," said Modesto, an associate professor of biology at Cape Breton University.

WATCH VIDEO: From a tiny, tough guy T. rex to a mummified duck-billed dino, take a look at these stories and more in our dinosaurs playlist.

Modesto and his team studied the fossils. The remains, along with prior finds, indicate the mammal-like predators survived for more than 35 million years and, toward the end of their time on Earth, co-existed with more advanced animals.

"Advanced" in this case refers to mammal-like characteristics that evolved to varying degrees in species of the period.

Christian Sidor, curator of vertebrate paleontology and an associate professor of biology at the University of Washington, agrees that the fossils belonged to a varanopid.

Sidor told Discovery News that the newly discovered protomammal "represents an upward extension for varanopids." He wishes more fossils for the predator existed.

SCIENCE CHANNEL QUIZ: Fossils, How Much Do You Know?

As it stands, Modesto and his team can still tell that the new Aerosaurus had a more primitive body design. It's a design that proved to be successful.

"These animals were the most agile predators of their time, sleek-looking when compared to their contemporaries," co-author Robert Reisz from the University of Toronto Mississauga said. "They seem to have survived a major change in the terrestrial fauna that occurred during the Middle Permian, a poorly understood extinction event in the history of life on land."

Aerosaurus's razor sharp teeth, with their finely serrated cutting edges, are typical of hypercarnivores. These are animals with a diet consisting of more than 70 percent meat. It's doubtful then that the new mammal-like predator sunk its specialized choppers into plants very often.

The body plan survives to this day to some extent in Komodo lizards. Aerosaurus wasn't even related to these monitor lizards, according to the researchers.

"The resemblances are superficial because of convergent evolution: animals that have adapted to similar life styles often converge on the same body plans," explained Modesto.

Aerosaurus eventually died out. Another protomammal group, called the cynodonts, gave rise to mammals. The cynodonts appeared some 1-3 million years after the lifetime of the newly identified varanopid. It then took another 35 million years of evolution before the first actual mammals emerged.
