Microsoft Makes $300M Investment In New Barnes & Noble Subsidiary To Battle With Amazon And Apple In E-books
Barnes & Noble has found a new, major partner in its fight to get an edge over Amazon and Apple in the market for e-books and the devices being used to consume them: it is teaming up with Microsoft in what the two are calling a strategic partnership, name yet to be determined. It will come in the form of a new subsidiary of B&N that will include all of its Nook business as well as its educational College business. Microsoft is making a $300 million investment in the subsidiary, valuing the company at $1.7 billion in exchange for around 17.6 percent equity in the subsidiary. The news leaves the door open for B&N to eventually spin these off into a separate business altogether -- or even sell them to Microsoft. Sony's Alpha A37 and NEX-F3 pose for the camera, reveal more angles, details
Well, well, talk about déjà vu! It was just yesterday that a corner of Sony's 16.1 megapixel NEX-F3 leaked onto the interwebs and now more photos have surfaced, along with a previously unannounced shooter, the Alpha A37 SLT. The pictures come courtesy of Yang Canggih, which says it had a chance to demo the two devices yesterday at Sony's Partner's Conference in Jakarta (curiously, the NEX-F3 post isn't live as of this writing, but Sony Alpha Rumors has the images up). Starting with the F3, the mirrorless camera has lost a smidgen of the curves found on its older sibling, the C3, adopting a slight bit of the angular edges that once made the NEX-7 the badass standout in the lineup. You'll notice that the shutter button and grip have an uncanny resemblance to the 7's, not to mention that it's clearly gained a pop-up flash -- a first for the lower-end NEXs. Past that, the rumored -- and self-portrait friendly -- 180 degree tilt-screen is also present, which'll likely give the C3 an edge over its siblings when it comes to composing shots. Also worth note, some of the buttons on back have been slightly repositioned.
Moving along, those hoping for a successor to the A35 will apparently have their wish granted with the 16.1 megapixel A37. According to Yang Canggih, it features the articulating display from last generation of NEX cams, Auto Portrait Framing (first introduced with the A57), four more effect modes than the a35 (up from 11) and an ergonomic grip in the vein of the A77. Sadly, that's about all that's currently known, so hopefully we'll get an official introduction to the cameras soon. Digital Storm locks and loads Ivy Bridge into its new recruits
Digital Storm has announced that its premium-priced (and not so premium-priced) gaming PCs will soon be touting Ivy Bridge processors. This means, going forward, all machines will come with the Intel's third generation Core architecture, with the PC maker already claiming it's managed overclocks at 4.8GHz. Like its machines, Digital Storm is keeping cool on when the systems will find their way from workshop to LAN, or what effect (if any) there'll be on pricing. Chris Brown Under Fire For Dog-Breeding Business
Must be Friday. Chris Brown is stirring up controversy once again, but no pop singers or plate glass windows were bashed beyond recognition this time.
This time, he's not in trouble with the law though. It's just his apparent side business breeding dogs and selling them for profit that has people riled up.
The R&B superstar is drawing heat from animal-rights activists, obviously, who want him instead to promote adoptions of animals from shelters.
On Monday, Brown's manager-mother, Joyce Hawkins, posted a link on her Twitter to CB Breeds, a website featuring this cute photo of her son and a pup.
CB Breeds is offering seven fully vaccinated American pit bull terrier pups for $1,000 a piece. Needless to say, the alleged puppy mill drew howls of protest.
While CB is a perfectly legitimate enterprise, People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA) was quick to issue a statement condemning him:
"This is a moneymaking scheme, and Brown will count the suckers who fall for it as he counts the money on the way to the bank," PETA said.
"There is no such thing as a responsible breeder while wonderful dogs are being put down in animal shelters across the country for lack of a good home."
"Shelters will count the bodies in the barrel. As Justin Bieber, Kellan Lutz and [other responsible celebrities] always say, "Adopt, never buy."
The Los Angeles chapter of the Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals, meanwhile, decried what it called his "backyard breeding."
Said spcaLA president Madeline Bernstein:
"There is no reason to breed and produce more pit bull puppies when there are pit bull puppies waiting for homes in every shelter in America."
"Furthermore, as some of these dogs suffer from and are victims of their owner's misuse, they can be even harder to place."
A publicist for the singer denied to E! News that Chris Brown is breeding, insisting that the puppies were part of a litter birthed by his family's dogs back home in Virginia and were being sold to make sure they get good homes.
"He loves animals, especially dogs," said the rep.
Chris recently posed with a puppy belonging to GF Karrueche Tran, for what that's worth. Which is pretty much nothing, we admit. Sorry.

Watching this guy take batting practice is a sight to behold.
A more than likely fake sight, but nevertheless, very cool!
Watch as he sets up a series of nets so that after hitting one ball, it ricochets back and lets him take another cut, which he ropes into the same spot, and so on. Add in another ball or two and you've got one impressive display of hitting. Or at least viral video fun.
The shortstop would catch all these easily in real life. Just saying.

Building your own wireless communications device isn't for the faint of heart, or the law-abiding -- the FCC tends to prefer placing its own stamp of approval on devices that utilize US airwaves, making a homegrown mobile phone an unlikely proposition. That didn't stop a team at the MIT Media Lab from creating such a DIY kit, however. Meet the Do-It-Yourself Cellphone. This wood-based mobile rig, while it's currently in the prototype phase (where it may indefinitely remain), would eventually ship with a circuit board, control pad, a fairly beefy antenna and a monochrome LCD. Sounds like it'd be right at home at some kid's garage workshop in the early '80s, not showcased at an MIT open house. The argument here is that people spend more time with their phone than with any other device, so naturally they'd want to build one to their liking. Nowadays, folks expect their pocketable handset to enable them to not only place and receive phone calls, but also store phone numbers, offer a rechargeable battery, and, well, in some cases even send and receive email, and surf the web -- none of which are available with such a kit.
The prototype we saw was fully functional. It could place calls. It could receive calls. There was even Caller ID! The phone does indeed feel homemade, with its laser-cut plywood case and a design that lacks some of the most basic gadget essentials, like a rechargeable battery (or at very least some provisions for replacing the 9-volt inside without unscrewing the case). Audio quality sounded fine, and calls went out and came in without a hitch -- there's a SIM card slot inside, letting you bring the nondescript phone to the carrier of your choice. Does it work? Yes. Is it worth dropping $100-150 in parts to build a jumbo-sized phone with a microscopic feature set? No, there's definitely nothing smart about the DIY Cellphone. If you want to throw together your own handset, however, and not risk anyone questioning the legitimacy of your homemade claim, you might want to keep an eye out for this to come to market.
