PlayStation Plus cloud storage boost landing 'soon' with system update v4.25

If you've been sat impatiently tapping your fingers on the desk waiting for that extra PlayStation Plus storage, then you might want to give that hand a break. According to the PlayStation blog, it's coming, and soon. The capacity bump will come in PS3 system update v4.25, and once installed, you'll just need to head over to the Saved Data Utility under the XMB's Game column to see it. Our friends over at Joystiq have pushed Sony for a more concrete time on the update's release, but if you've already maxed out that current 150MB, there's light at the end of the cloud tunnel.

Germany should back growth or leave euro: Soros

VIENNA (Reuters) - Germany should leave the euro zone if it is not prepared to take a more decisive lead in helping the euro zone's weaker nations escape a spiral of increasing indebtedness and economic decline, veteran financier George Soros said on Saturday.

Soros said Europe faced a prolonged depression and an acrimonious end to the European unification project if steps were not taken to help its southern nations grow their way out of the debt crisis by collectively assuming some of their debt and relaxing its German-led insistence on austerity.

"Germany should either lead in developing a growth policy, political union and burden-sharing, accept the cost of leadership, or leave through an amicable arrangement," Soros said in an interview with Reuters television in Vienna.

Soros, a liberal philanthropist who rose to fame as an investor on a big bet against the British pound in 1992, said a Germany-free euro zone could be more competitive in exports and service its debts more cheaply with a weaker, France-led "Latin" euro.

Otherwise, Germany should step up and accept its de-facto leadership role, and abandon its Bundesbank-led ideological opposition to central bank financing of states and strict adherence to a goal of inflation close to but below 2 percent.

Berlin has given its backing to the European Central Bank's new bond-buying program to lower struggling euro zone countries' borrowing costs, which Germany's central bank has criticized.

Soros said the plan would likely buy Europe "a longer period than previous measures that were taken".

"It's a more dramatic move," he added, but he predicted Spain and Italy would not apply to be part of the program.

What Europe needed more was some form of common euro zone bond, which was currently not acceptable to Germany.

"Secondly it needs to be able to grow, you need a growth program, and that is again not what Germany is imposing on Europe," Soros said.

"LOST DECADE"

Soros, 82, drew a parallel with the financial crisis of 1982, when lenders protected the international banking system by lending debtor countries just enough to service their debts, pushing them into severe austerity programs that led to depression.

"It was the lost decade for Latin America and something very similar is happening now in the euro situation, where Germany is actually playing the same role within the euro as the IMF did within the global financial system," Soros said.

"This policy is pushing Europe into a depression which is going to last five or 10 years," Soros said.

He said this would compound slowing global economic growth.

"I think this whole process is reinforcing the deflationary tendencies in the world, so Germany itself is slowing down and will stop growing," he said.

"China is actually destined for a hard landing, which will reinforce the global tendency towards depression."

Elaborating on an essay published on Saturday on the New York Review of Books website, Soros said such a scenario put at risk not only the euro currency but the whole European Union, ending a decades-long project to unite the continent.

He predicted Germany would not pressure Greece to leave the European Union but would continue to provide just enough support for it to service its debts, while insisting it persist with a harsh austerity program.

"I think that Germany is going to take a hard line on Greece but will not go as far as to push Greece out of the euro or out of the European Union," he said.

He added that France might have difficulties in accepting a role as the leader of a "Latin" euro.

"France has done relatively little in the form of structural and fiscal reforms, and it currently enjoys a low risk premium because it's closely allied with Germany," he said.

"If that link were broken, France would have probably a higher risk premium than Italy."

Soros will give a speech entitled "The Tragedy of the European Union" in Berlin on Monday.

Soros's Cayman Islands-based Soros Fund Management has around $25 billion in assets. Soros himself is worth about $20 billion, according to Forbes.

Egypt, Israel coordinating on Sinai security sweep: army

CAIRO (Reuters) - Egypt and Israel are coordinating on Cairo's biggest security sweep in decades against militants in Sinai, in which 32 people have been killed, an army spokesman said on Saturday, the first clear statement on communication between the neighbors.

Israel fears Islamist militants, possibly linked to al Qaeda, have gained a foothold in the Sinai border area since the overthrow last year of President Hosni Mubarak.

Israeli officials have privately voiced concern about heavy military equipment being sent to Sinai, which is subject to restrictions on the deployment of weapons under the 1979 peace treaty between Egypt and Israel.

Colonel Ahmed Mohamed Mohamed Ali told a news conference in Cairo that 32 "criminal elements" were killed and 38 suspects arrested, including non-Egyptians, during the operation which began on August 7.

"Egypt is coordinating with the Israeli side over the presence of Egyptian armed forces in Sinai. They know this.

"The deployment of the armed forces on all the territory of Sinai is not a violation of the peace treaty between Egypt and Israel," he said.

The sweep began after militants killed 16 border guards on August 5 in the worst attack since Egypt's 1973 war with Israel.

Ali said the operation "will continue until its goals have been achieved ... These are not just military goals but also developmental goals for Sinai."

Bedouin tribes in the area have long complained of neglect by the central government.

Hundreds of troops with tanks, armored vehicles and helicopters were sent to Sinai in a joint operation with police to raid militant hideouts, arrest suspects and seize weapons.

The Egyptian military is replacing some of its heavy tanks in Sinai with light armored vehicles, security sources said this week.

But Ali rejected the idea that Egypt was pulling out its heavy equipment in response to pressure from Israel. He said the operation was entering a new phase that required different equipment.

"The military operation is in the interest of all sides," he said.

Asked whether Egypt was coordinating with the United States over Sinai, Ali said: "Cooperation between Egypt and the U.S. is strategic, long-standing and goes beyond simple military operations. However, the military operations in Sinai are independent, carried out by the capabilities of the Egyptian armed forces."

Some 31 tunnels used to smuggle goods into the Hamas-ruled Gaza Strip were also destroyed, he said. The tunnel trade is central to Gaza's economy which has suffered under an Israeli blockade on the Palestinian territory imposed in 2006.

The tunnels have also been used to smuggle weapons. "We have seized arms, rockets, RPGs and automatic rifles," Ali said.

Disorder has spread in Sinai since Mubarak was ousted in a popular uprising, with Islamist militants stepping up attacks on Egyptian security forces and the Israeli border. Egypt's new president, Mohamed Mursi, has vowed to restore order.

"The armed forces will combat thought with thought and arms with arms. We will only use weapons with those who have weapons," Ali said.

Johnny Depp shares 'ink' with Damien Echols

TORONTO (AP) ? The man Johnny Depp helped release from Arkansas' death row has become like a brother to him, right down to getting matching tattoos.

"We have some," Depp said Saturday as he touched a tattoo on the right side of his chest.

"This one Damien designed. It's one of my all-time favorites, and it means quite a lot to me," Depp told The Associated Press before the premiere of the documentary, "West of Memphis," about Damien Echols and his two co-defendants.

Echols said whenever he and Depp get together, they often end up in a tattoo parlor. Depp said it's about "celebrating the moment."

Echols, Jessie Misskelley, and Jason Baldwin spent 18 years in prison for the 1993 murders of three 8-year old boys in West Memphis. All three were released after agreeing to an Alford plea that allowed them to maintain their innocence while pleading guilty.

The three were the subjects of the "Paradise Lost" documentaries, which captured Depp's interest in the case.

"You saw those initial documentaries, you make a choice: Am I going to watch the thing and go 'Wow, that's really horrible,' and go out and get a milkshake," Depp said.

Depp, along with Pearl Jam's Eddie Vedder, Natalie Maines of the Dixie Chicks, musician Henry Rollins, and filmmaker Peter Jackson, who produced "West of Memphis," helped pay the legal fees to free the three men.

The 37-year old Echols always wears sunglasses, a product of not seeing much daylight after spending so many years in a prison cell. Echols said Depp's support wasn't limited to Echols' time in prison.

"He's been with us every single step of the way. Since we've gotten out, he's become like a brother to me. And that's one of the things we always do just as part of that bond is whenever you get tattoos like that, it's something you carry with you through the rest of your life and it's really meaningful."
